Fill in the Blank Friday

Totally digging this multi-layered and multi-coloured heart collage by Esther Ramirez. It’s whimsical and arty without being all ‘barfy romantic*’.

1. Waking up at the break of dawn to go shopping is my idea of: a good strategy… on any other day of the year other than Black Friday. I like having the shop to myself, no lineups, and all the sizes available.

2. If I were to go shopping today I would be on the hunt for: … dinner.

3. The best thing I ate yesterday was: “Fridge Cleaner” pasta which contained the remnants of my shopping: celery, carrots, bacon, garlic, and spaghetti tossed with beef stock and lots of oregano (because the lid accidentally fell off).

4. Something I’ve been learning lately is: that I love having a regular 9-5 job and daily office interaction with awesome humans.

5. I cannot start my day without: breakfast. I will get seriously crazy on you.

6. My nighttime attire consists of: clothes (or lack there of) that I would never wear in public.

7. I am looking forward to the weekend: so that I can recharge, make plans for the coming week, and organize all my loose ends into awesome check marks on a ‘to do’ list.

Happy Weekend internet Dudes.

*’Barfy Romantic’ is a descriptive phrase that needs to be added to the English language. It describes that kind of nauseating feeling that causes you to turn your head away from kissing scenes in too-cheesy romantic comedies. (Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE romantic comedies but, there is a fine line between ‘Awe’ and ‘Ugh’!)

This is a video for the beautiful Nadège Patisserie. It’s dangerously close to where I live. Another shop that sells macarons in downtown Toronto is Petit Thuet, dangerously close to my work, with an amazing espresso macaron.

My friend Lisa home-made me a giant box of lemon and mint chocolate macarons for my birthday last week. They only lasted 2 days. It was amazing and just what I wanted.

When I was little I remember hearing people talk about these french pastries, these ‘macarons’… I thought, who cares, they aren’t that good. My grandma makes them at least eight times a year! Of course, I was thinking of ‘macaroons‘, those chocolate and coconut mounds that have been brought to every family gathering since before I can remember.

Cheers to foods.

Not Quite Spring

1. I am currently obsessed with: Beautiful ladies. It’s easier to stare at a beautiful lady than to stare at a beautiful man, and oh my goodness there are so many beautiful ladies in my city.

2. Today I am: Feeling ghostly.

3. The age I am is: 22, and the age I feel is: Changing… mostly I feel 19, but sometimes I feel 45 and then the other day I went bowling and shared a super lightweight ball with a granny and I felt 65.

4. My favourite place is: transient. No one place can hold my attention or provide enough of something good to really be my favourite place. Maybe my favourite places are the ones I’m dreaming about visiting because in my head they are everything I’m looking for and are full of cheap food and great light.

5. Something I have been procrastinating is: Applying for jobs. I need a new one.

6. The last thing I purchased was: Food and snacks to keep at work for the week. Yesterday was the best lunch ever, dill and lemon tuna on spring mix leaves. It’s great working close to a grocery store.

7. The thing I love most about my home is: the light that comes into my bedroom through the wall of windows. It’s also a great place to people watch because there are wide wooden ledges to sit on and a hundred strangers always passing by. I like the ‘whooshing’ of the huge curtains opening and closing when I pull on the curtain cords. I like my gas stove that is the heart of so many delicious things.

Sit, stay, play

I like these dogs. They live in cool houses and are big enough to scare away intruders (hopefully). In my opinion, dogs should be able to contribute to the household by being big ol’ running smiling security guards who play fetch and bark at snakes. Working dogs. It’s a thing.

I would like a dog one day. Probably.

Speaking of dogs with jobs… Did you know you can raise a puppy and do good at the same time? You can raise a Service Dog! My family and I did. His name was Kramer (yes after Seinfeld) and he was a big giant golden retriever who is now a companion for an Autistic child. It was a super fun, super feel-good thing to do, and now Kramer and his kid are insanely connected. If you’re thinking about raising a service dog and you live in Canada you can contact National Service Dogs or Autism Dog Services for more info.

Holiday Alternatives

This is a really neat ‘tree’. I don’t like the idea that you NEED a ‘real’ tree… I don’t like the idea that you NEED to BUY decorations. I don’t like the idea of HAVING to do ANYTHING. But this is a neat, awesome, romantic DIY compromise. Photo via Design for Mankind.

Fill in the blank Friday

1. I wish: I could not be afraid of snakes and be able to eat (lots) of cheese.

2. Yesterday I: got tipsy with my roommate while watching ’30 Rock’ and ‘The Office’. We ended up playing her one Christmas 8-track while decorating the living room ceiling with paper snowflakes and stars. It looks really really neat.

3. Today I will: go for drinks and hopefully not freeze to death. I hope our new modem was delivered today so I can go on the internet at home again.

4. Tomorrow I will: eat eggs and then get on a bus to Kitchener-Waterloo for a thrift shopping, home town, present finding weekend.

5. Maybe: I will be able to convince an old friend to join me for hot chocolate while I’m home (Looking at you SC!).

6. Someday I will: remember to pack a lunch.

7. I love: sleepovers, baby animals, girls nights with wine and olives and cheese, my tiny big sister, my tall little brother, thrift hunting, oldies, free food, fancy salads, granny smith apples, sweet potatoes, (I could list food forever)…
